People think about cover for a long-distance move as a policy question. In practice it is a documentation question, because any cover depends on establishing what you sent and what state it was in, and that has to happen before the truck leaves.
Just-In-Time Moving handles long-distance moves from Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County. We are licensed in Utah and carry general liability insurance.
The inventory
The core document on any long move. It lists what went on the truck, and it is what turns a suspicion at the far end into a specific claim about a specific item.
Ask for a copy and keep it somewhere that is not in a box. It is the single most useful piece of paper in the whole process and it is regularly packed by accident.
Read it before the truck leaves rather than after. If something is missing from the list, that is much easier to sort out while everybody is standing in your driveway.
Condition, recorded before departure
Existing wear is normal and it is the thing that later becomes contested, so record it now.
Photograph anything valuable from several angles, including any existing scratches, and capture serial numbers on electronics and appliances. Date-stamped photographs are the entire argument later.
Do the same for furniture already loose at the joints, because pieces in that condition can fail in transit without anybody handling them badly, and a photograph showing it was loose beforehand protects everybody.
What is excluded almost everywhere
Worth knowing before rather than after.
Cash, documents, jewellery and irreplaceable items are excluded essentially universally, which is exactly why every reputable mover tells you to carry them. It is not a formality.
Boxes you packed yourself are often treated differently, because the cause of breakage inside a sealed box you filled is genuinely open.
Pre-existing damage, which is why the photographs matter.

Your own policies
Check what your homeowner or renter cover does during a move. Some policies apply, some partially, some not at all, and your insurer can answer in a five minute call. Make it before rather than after.
At delivery
Use the inventory as things come off, ticking items rather than watching. Look at things as they are unloaded, not a week later. Damage raised while the crew is present is a conversation; found afterwards it is a dispute.
