Old houses are the real variable

A great deal of the housing in the central neighborhoods predates the furniture people now try to fit through it. In The Avenues, Capitol Hill and the older parts of Liberty Wells and Sugar House, that means staircases that are narrower than modern ones, turn more sharply, and often have a landing halfway that was sized for people rather than for a studio upright.

The turn is what stops pianos, far more often than the width of the stairs or the weight of the instrument. A straight run of stairs is a known quantity at almost any length. A ninety degree turn at the bottom into a narrow hallway is where the geometry either works or does not, and it is worth establishing which before the day rather than during it.

The other local factor is the approach. Many of those houses have no driveway, a steep front walk, and several steps up from the sidewalk before you even reach the door. That outside section is genuinely the most exposed part of the job.

Winter, and what it changes

From November through March that approach may also be icy, and this is one job where that is not a minor detail. A piano on a ramp or a set of outside steps is a large mass with real momentum, and a crew cannot simply stop one that has started moving on ice.

If your move is in winter, clear and salt the walk and the steps at both ends before the crew arrives, and do it again on the morning. If conditions on the day are genuinely unsafe, we would rather tell you honestly and reschedule than take the chance with your instrument and our crew.

One thing worth saying plainly and which applies year round: moving a piano affects its tuning, and so does putting it in a room with a different temperature and humidity. That is true of every piano move by every company, and it is not a sign that anything went wrong. Let it settle in the new room for a while before you book the tuner.
