Packing and moving are often handled by different companies, or by the same company with no connection between the two days. It works, and something is lost, and it is worth knowing what.

What continuity actually buys

Knowledge of the load. A crew that packed your kitchen knows which boxes hold glass and which hold pans. That shapes how the truck is built, without anyone having to explain it or rely on labelling being read under time pressure.

No second survey. The people arriving on move day already know the house: the narrow turn on the stairs, the door that sticks, that the piano is in the back room. On a separate-company arrangement all of that is rediscovered.

One conversation about anything unusual. If you flagged a valuable item at packing, it does not need flagging again to different people.

Nobody in between. When packing and moving are separate, a broken item produces a question about which stage caused it, and that question is genuinely hard to answer. One company across both removes it.

That last point is the substantive one, and it is worth weighing against price when you compare.

What to ask

If you are using one company for both, ask whether the same crew does both days. Often it is, and it is worth confirming rather than assuming.

If you are using different companies, that is fine, and make sure the moving crew are told what they need to know: which boxes are fragile, what is valuable, what the access is like. Do not assume it transfers.

Letting people into your house

Packing is more intimate than moving. A crew packing a house handles everything you own, including the contents of drawers.

Ask who is coming, whether they work for the company, and who is leading. Set aside anything private before the day rather than during it, and keep documents, jewellery and medication for yourself.

These are ordinary questions and a company uncomfortable with them has told you something.

There is a practical benefit to the same people doing both days that has nothing to do with trust. Packing a house teaches a crew where everything is: which room holds the awkward furniture, that the loft is used, that the garage has a chest freezer in it. On move day none of that has to be rediscovered, and the walkthrough at the start becomes a confirmation rather than a survey. On a large house that difference is measured in hours rather than minutes.
