What Drives the Cost of Packing in Salt Lake City

What the number is made of

Volume, not floor area. A minimalist four-bedroom house packs faster than a crowded two-bedroom. The count that matters is boxes, and nobody has that number until somebody looks.

How much glass there is. The single biggest multiplier. A kitchen with a lot of glassware, a china cabinet, framed art and mirrors takes several times longer per cubic foot than a room of clothing, because each item is handled individually and wrapped.

Books. Slower and heavier than people expect, and they need small boxes, which means more boxes.

Access. A basement and a loft add carrying to the packing, and in older houses here that carrying is up narrow stairs.

The levers you control

Declutter first, weeks ahead. Nothing else is close. Anything unwanted costs three times: packing, moving, and disposal at the other end. The garage, basement and storage areas are where the volume hides.

Pack the easy things yourself. Clothing, linens, books, toys, the garage. These need no technique, only time, and time is what you can supply. Hand over the rooms where technique matters.

Do the kitchen last and hand it over. If you only pay for one room, this is the one, because it is where breakage happens.

Be honest at the survey. An optimistic description produces an optimistic quote, and the correction happens on packing day.

What you should not economise on

Boxes. Underfilled and reused boxes crush, and a crushed box takes everything in it. Buy proper ones or use ours.

Wrapping for glass. It is the whole point.

Anything irreplaceable, which should travel with you regardless of who packs.

There is also a cost worth counting on the other side of the ledger. Packing a house yourself is typically several evenings and a weekend, sometimes considerably more, and it is the part of a move people most consistently underestimate. If that time has a value to you, or if you are working through it while also holding down a job and a family, the comparison is not simply the quote against zero. It is the quote against a fortnight of evenings, done tired, by somebody who has not packed a kitchen before.
