A recognisable call: somebody started a move themselves, and it is not going the way it was supposed to. The easy items are gone, what is left is the heavy awkward half, and the people who promised to help have quietly become unavailable.

Why this happens

Predictably rather than through anybody's fault.

Self-moves are planned on the assumption of a constant pace. In practice the first two hours are quick, because the boxes are easy and everybody is fresh, and then it slows sharply. What remains at that point is disproportionately the difficult part: the sofa, the appliances, the thing at the back of the basement.

Meanwhile the helpers have done what they came to do and there is a rental return time approaching.

What we can do

Come and finish it, usually. A crew arriving to complete a partial load is straightforward work.

What helps is calling earlier rather than later. A call at two in the afternoon is a manageable job. The same call at seven in the evening with a truck due back at eight is a much harder problem, and sometimes not solvable that day.

If you think there is any chance you will need help, book it in advance. It costs nothing to have it arranged and it removes the worst version of the day.

Why a smaller operation suits this

Not because larger companies are unwilling, but because their scheduling is built around planned jobs in blocks. A two-hour rescue in the middle of a Saturday is difficult to slot into that.

A locally owned operation can often just decide. The person answering the phone is connected to the crews, so they know who is finishing where and whether it is workable.

Scheduling runs seven days a week including evenings, which is what makes most of these possible at all.

What to have ready when you call

What is left, where it is, whether there are stairs, and what the vehicle is. Photographs if you can.

Anything specialty, particularly a piano, safe or hot tub, because those need particular equipment and crew size and cannot simply be added.

Your deadline, honestly, including the rental return time.
