A Crew, Not a Labour Pool: Movers in Salt Lake City

Three people who have worked together for a year are not the same as three people who met in the parking lot.

The word crew gets used loosely. Sometimes it means a team that works together most days. Sometimes it means whoever was available that morning. Those produce noticeably different days, and it is a fair thing to ask about before you book.

Just-In-Time Moving is locally owned and works throughout Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County.

Why working together matters

Moving is a physical job done in pairs and threes, in confined spaces, with heavy objects and limited visibility. Almost all of it depends on people anticipating each other.

Carrying a sofa down a staircase that turns is a negotiation conducted mostly without speaking. One person can see and the other cannot. The person walking backwards is relying entirely on the person facing forwards. People who have done that together a hundred times move differently from people doing it for the first time.

The same applies to loading. A truck is built to a plan, and a crew that shares the plan builds it faster and tighter than one where somebody is being told where to put each item.

It shows up as speed, which is money on an hourly local move, and it shows up as fewer marks on your walls.

What to ask

Do the people coming work for the company? Some operations use day labour or subcontract the job outright. Neither is automatically bad and both change who is accountable and who has been vetted.

Do the same people generally work together? A straightforward question and a revealing one.

Who is leading the crew, and who do I call? Get a number that reaches somebody who knows about your job.

Ask these of anybody you are considering. They are ordinary questions and a company that is uncomfortable with them has told you something.

What the crew should bring

Moving pads, stretch wrap, floor runners, dollies and straps as standard, used even on short jobs where skipping them would be quicker. Furniture wrapped before it goes on the truck rather than after it is stacked.

Standard furniture disassembly and reassembly is included in a residential move.
