Just-In-Time Moving is licensed in Utah and carries general liability insurance. Almost every mover says a version of that sentence, and very few explain what it means for the contents of your house, so here it is plainly.

Two different things

General liability and cover for the goods being moved are separate, and people conflate them constantly.

General liability broadly concerns damage caused in the course of the work. It is what a building manager wants a certificate for before letting a crew into a shared building, and it is a normal thing to verify.

Cover for your belongings in transit is its own question with its own limits and exclusions. Ask any mover specifically what applies to household goods, what the limit is, and what is excluded, and ask for the answer in terms you actually follow rather than accepting a reassurance.

The follow-up worth asking: what is the process if something is damaged, and what do you need from me for it to work.

What is typically not covered anywhere

Worth knowing before rather than after.

Items you packed yourself, in many arrangements, or covered differently. If a box you sealed arrives with broken contents, the question of what caused it is genuinely open.

Cash, documents, jewellery and irreplaceable items. These are excluded almost universally, which is exactly why every reputable mover tells you to carry them yourself. It is not a formality.

Pre-existing damage, which is why photographs before the move matter.

Inherent condition. Furniture already loose at the joints can fail in transit without anybody handling it badly, particularly flat-pack that has been assembled more than once.

What to do

Check your own homeowner or renter policy. Some cover belongings during a move, some partially, some not at all, and your insurer can answer in a five minute call.

Photograph anything valuable before it moves, including condition and serial numbers. It takes minutes and it is the difference between a claim and a discussion about what something looked like.

Tell us in advance about anything of unusual value so it is handled accordingly rather than treated as ordinary furniture.

Raise anything on the day. Damage noticed while the crew is present is a conversation; damage found a week later is much harder for everyone.
