What a Safe Move Is Priced On in Salt Lake City

People expect a safe to be priced by weight, the way freight is. Weight matters and it is not the main thing, because a heavy safe on a flat concrete route is a straightforward job and a lighter one at the bottom of turning basement stairs is not.

The four factors

Weight, from the model rather than a guess. Manufacturer figures vary widely between safes that look similar, so the make and model is worth finding. It sets the crew size and the equipment.

Stairs, and their direction. The largest variable. A safe on a flat route is a controlled roll. On a staircase it becomes a different discipline, and downward is more demanding than up because gravity is assisting rather than resisting.

The route surface and transitions. Concrete to carpet, a threshold, a step down into a garage, gravel or a lawn between the door and the truck. Wheels that roll on concrete do not roll on landscaping rock.

Anchoring, at either end. Removing bolts and re-anchoring are both work, and both need the right tools on the truck, which means telling us at booking rather than on the day.

Why quotes vary

Mostly because of what was asked. A figure given from the word safe is a guess. A quote that follows questions about weight, stairs, turns and the route is a real one.

Crew size is the other reason, and it is not a place to economise. A safe moved by too few people is where floors crack and people get hurt.

What reduces it

Empty it completely. Real weight removed, contents not shifting inside a top-heavy object, and the contents never our responsibility in transit.

Clear the route, both ends, including moving vehicles and, in winter, clearing and salting the approach.

Decide the destination position in advance, so it is placed once.

Send the model number and photographs of where it stands, the route out, and the approach to a truck.

One cost that is not in the moving figure and should be in your planning: anchoring at the new address, if that is what you want. It needs the right fixings for whatever the floor actually is, and on anything other than a slab it is worth establishing what is underneath before somebody drills. That is a short conversation with a builder rather than a moving company, and having had it in advance is the difference between the safe being placed and anchored in one visit or standing in the right room unbolted for a month.
