How to Brief a Labor-Only Crew in Salt Lake City

On a full-service move the company runs the day. On labor-only, you do, and the crew is executing your plan. That distinction is the thing people find unfamiliar, and getting it right is most of what separates a good labor-only job from a frustrating one.

Before they arrive

Have a plan, even a rough one. What order things should load in, what has to go on last because it comes off first, and what is not going at all.

Everything boxed, taped and closed. The vehicle on site, accessible and unlocked. The route clear from the room to the vehicle, with cars moved.

Anything not going in a separate room.

The five-minute brief

Do this properly at the start rather than answering questions all afternoon.

Walk the load with them. What is going, what is staying, what is fragile, what is heavy, what needs to come apart.

Say what goes on last. Anything you need first at the other end: bedding, tools, the box with the kettle. On a self-move this is entirely your responsibility and it is the thing most often forgotten.

Point out anything valuable or sentimental. It changes the handling and it is the thing least often said.

Say where the vehicle is and any constraint on it, including the return time, because it affects how they pace.

Say who is in charge. If several of you are present, one person should be answering questions. A crew taking instructions from three people who disagree is slower than one taking them from a single point of contact.

During

Be reachable, and let them work. You are not expected to carry, and an extra pair of hands outside a loading plan tends to slow things down.

If something needs to change, say so early rather than after it is loaded.

At the end

Check the load is secured before you drive. Walk the property and confirm nothing that should have gone is still standing there.

Ask the crew, before they leave, whether anything about the load needs knowing on the road. They built it, so they know if something is stacked in a way that wants care on a corner, or which strap is holding what, or which item should come off first at the other end. That is thirty seconds of conversation and it is information you would otherwise be guessing at somewhere on the interstate with a truck you are not used to driving.
