Student housing has a feature ordinary tenancies do not, and it catches people out every year: in many shared arrangements, damage to common parts of the unit is apportioned across everybody rather than attributed to whoever caused it.

Photograph everything, at both ends
The whole game, and it takes ten minutes.
When you move in, photograph your own room in detail and the shared spaces too, including existing marks, before anybody's belongings are in. Keep them somewhere you will still have them at the end of the year, not only on a phone you might replace.
When you move out, the same again once your things are gone.
If charges are apportioned, photographs of the shared kitchen on the day you arrived are the only thing that distinguishes damage that was already there.
Sort out the shared spaces together
Agree with your roommates before the end of term who is cleaning what and by when, and do not leave it to whoever moves out last, because that person will be doing it alone and resentfully.
Agree what happens to jointly bought items. Sold, taken by one person, or disposed of. Left undecided, they sit in a unit and become a charge.
Read what is actually required
Student housing tends to have specific move-out requirements: cleaning standards, what has to be removed, sometimes a checklist and an inspection appointment.
Read it at the start of the final term rather than the last week. It is much cheaper to satisfy with time.
Do not leave furniture behind
The single most expensive mistake. Anything left is usually removed at a price the housing office sets, and in a shared unit that charge may be split.
Book a haul for the day after your move rather than the same day, because the pile is not final until the last box is out. And sell or give things away weeks ahead, since the last week is when everyone else is trying to do the same thing.
