Get the room's real dimensions

Not the brochure's square footage. Ask for a floor plan with measurements, including where the windows, doors, wardrobes and any fixed furniture are.

Then measure the furniture you intend to bring. This is where most disappointment on the day comes from: a bed and dresser that will not both fit, or a recliner that blocks a walking route.

Ask specifically whether the room comes furnished, part furnished, or empty, and whether the bed is provided. Communities differ and people frequently arrive with a bed they did not need or without one they did.

Ask the community five things

What is not permitted? Many have rules about heaters, candles, cooking appliances, extension leads, and sometimes rugs, which are a fall risk.

Are there restrictions on wall fixings?

What are the move-in hours and days? Frequently narrow, and sometimes a specific slot you are assigned.

Which entrance, and is there a lift to book?

Do you require a certificate of insurance from the mover? Most do. Ask early, since processing takes time.

Prioritise the things that make it feel like home

Space is limited, so the choices matter more than usual. The favourite chair, the bedside items, the photographs, the clock and the bedding are worth more to somebody settling in than an extra chest of drawers.

Set the room up the same day rather than leaving boxes. Bed made, chair placed, photographs out. Arriving to a finished room instead of a stack of cartons changes the first night considerably.

Where you can, arrange furniture as it was before. Familiar layout helps, and it matters a great deal for anybody with memory difficulties.

Pace the day

Keep it short and, if possible, have the person arrive after the heavy work is done rather than sitting through it.

Bring medication, documents and essentials by hand rather than on the truck.
