The furniture that does not fit

The defining problem of a downsizing move is arithmetic. A four-bedroom house of furniture does not go into a two-bedroom home, and no amount of clever placement changes that.

The mistake people make is deferring it. Everything gets moved, the new place fills up, and then there is a second problem to solve while living among boxes. It is much easier to decide in the old house, where you can see the pieces in context and where there is room to sort.

Measure the new rooms before the move and be realistic about the big items: the dining table, the sectional, the china cabinet, the piano. If something plainly will not fit, deciding its fate early gives you options. Family may want it, and family usually needs notice to arrange collection.

Sort into three destinations rather than two. What goes to the new home, what goes to family, what is being cleared. Two-way sorting stalls immediately, because the hard items are exactly the ones that are neither.

Short moves have their own shape

Because the distance is short, these are often done as a single day with both addresses. That works well and it is worth knowing what it means: the crew is loading, driving, unloading and placing all in one stretch, and the pace is set by the decisions, not the drive.

It also means the old house is still available while the new one is being filled, which is genuinely useful. If something turns out not to fit or not to work, there is somewhere for it to be while that gets resolved. Do not give up access to the old property the same hour the truck leaves if you can avoid it.
