Checking a Moving Company Actually Exists

Most complaints about moving companies are ordinary service problems. The small number that are genuinely serious tend to involve operations that were never quite real businesses, and those are identifiable before you book.

The ten minute check

Is there a real business identity? A company name, used consistently, with a phone number that is answered as that business. Not only a listing and a mobile.

Is there a physical presence? A findable address. Operations with no location and no vehicle you can identify are worth more caution.

Do the details match across places? The name, number and address on a website, a listing and an estimate should agree. Inconsistency there is genuinely informative.

Will they show licensing and insurance? Ask for it rather than accepting the phrase, and look at the dates on what you are shown. We are licensed in Utah and carry general liability insurance.

Is there a history? Reviews across more than one place, over a period, rather than a cluster of recent ones. A short history is not damning; it is worth knowing.

Ask for a local reference

Underused and effective. Ask whether they have done a move in your area recently and whether that customer would take a call.

Not everybody can offer one, and the willingness to try tells you something either way. If you do speak to somebody, ask whether the final figure matched the estimate, which is the most informative question there is.

The signs that should stop you

A large deposit demanded before any work. No written estimate. Reluctance to show insurance. Pressure to decide immediately. A quote given without any questions about your house.

Any one of those is a reason to keep looking, and they tend to appear together.

One additional check that takes a minute: search the company name alongside the word complaint or review and read what comes back with a sceptical eye in both directions. You are not looking for a perfect record, which nobody has. You are looking for a pattern, and specifically for whether the same problem appears repeatedly and how the company responded to it. A single furious account tells you little. Four people describing the same behaviour over two years tells you a great deal.
