Hot Tub Movers Specialists

Before a spa can be moved it has to be empty, and empty means genuinely empty rather than drained through the hose bib and called done.

Residual water is the single most common cause of damage to a hot tub in transit, and in Utah winters it is not close.

Just-In-Time Moving moves spas across West Valley City and Salt Lake County. Here is what needs to happen first.

Why the drain valve is not enough

The main drain empties the shell. It does not empty the plumbing, and a spa contains a considerable length of pipework, several jets, the pump housings, the heater assembly and the filter compartment, all of which retain water after the tub looks empty.

Moving a spa on its side redistributes that water into places it was never meant to sit. And if the tub is transported or stored below freezing, water left in a pump housing or a heater expands and cracks the component, which is a repair that can exceed what the move cost.

The sequence

Turn off the power at the breaker first. Running a pump dry destroys the seal, and it happens within seconds.

Drain the shell through the main drain, allowing time; gravity draining a full spa is slow.

Remove the filter and empty the filter compartment, which holds water after everything else looks dry.

Open the pump unions to release what is trapped in the housings. This is the step most often skipped and the one that matters most in cold weather.

Blow the lines out. A wet-dry vacuum on blow through the jets and the drain clears what gravity will not. Work through every jet.

Sponge the footwell dry, since a surprising amount collects there.

If you are not confident with the unions and the plumbing, a spa technician will do this properly, and it is worth it for anything valuable.

Cold weather adds a step

If the spa will sit outdoors before or after the move in freezing conditions, blowing the lines out stops being optional. Some owners add spa-specific antifreeze to the plumbing; that is a question for a technician rather than a mover.

The rest of the preparation

Remove the cover and its lifter and transport them separately. Take out the steps, headrests and anything loose. Have the electrical disconnection done by an electrician beforehand.

Tell us when the drain was done. A spa emptied the morning of the move has usually not finished draining.
