Start from the new place, not the old one

The instinct is to walk the current house deciding what to let go, which is exhausting and never finishes.

Reverse it. Get the floor plan and the measurements of the new home and decide what goes into each room. There is space for one sofa, one dining table, this many bookcases. That list is short, it is concrete, and everything else is in the second category by default.

It changes the emotional shape of the job from giving things up to choosing what comes.

Family first, and be specific about it

Family members usually want less than everybody hopes and specific things rather than furniture generally.

Ask directly and early, with a deadline. Vague offers produce a garage of items nobody collects. A date after which things are sold or donated is not unkind; it is what makes the process finish.

Be realistic about transport. A daughter in another state is not taking a dresser, and shipping it will cost more than the dresser.

Selling: worth it for some things only

Genuine antiques, quality furniture in good condition, jewellery, tools and collections can be worth selling, and an estate sale company will handle a whole house for a percentage if the volume justifies it.

Ordinary furniture, older electronics and general household goods are usually not worth the effort. Being honest about which category things fall into saves weeks.

For serviceable furniture and household items. Book collections in advance rather than assuming, since organisations are selective and schedules fill.

Storage, carefully

Storage is a reasonable answer for a genuinely undecided decision with a date on it. It is an expensive answer for a decision nobody wants to make, and units rented during a downsizing move are frequently still rented three years later at a cost exceeding what is inside.

If you use it, put a review date on the calendar.
