Somebody who has lived in one house for decades has accumulated a considerable number of organisations that write to them there. Missing one is not usually catastrophic, but a missed prescription or an unnoticed insurance lapse can be.

Do these first

Mail forwarding with the postal service, set up a couple of weeks ahead. It is the safety net that catches everything you forget, but treat it as a net rather than a solution, since it expires.

Social Security and any pension provider. Direct payments and correspondence both depend on current details.

Medicare, and any supplemental or advantage plan. Note that some plans are tied to a service area, so a move can genuinely affect coverage and occasionally opens an enrolment window. Worth asking rather than assuming, particularly on a longer-distance move.

Bank, and anything on automatic payment.

Health, which is the one that actually matters

Physicians, specialists and the dentist. If the move changes which practice is reachable, arrange transfers rather than leaving it.

The pharmacy above all. Prescriptions should be transferred before the move, not after, and it is worth confirming there is enough medication in hand to cover the transition. Running out during a move is the most common avoidable problem here.

Ask for copies of records, or confirm they will transfer.

The rest of the list

Homeowners or renters insurance, updated for the new address and the right contents figure. Vehicle registration and driving licence. Voter registration. Utilities at both ends. Any long-term care or life insurance policy.

Then the smaller ones: subscriptions, church or community organisations, veterans' benefits if applicable, and anybody who visits, from a cleaner to a home health aide.

Keep the important documents out of the truck

Deeds, wills, powers of attorney, insurance policies, birth and marriage certificates, tax records and anything financial should travel with a family member.

If there is a safe deposit box, note where it is and who has access.

Write it down and tick it off

A list on paper, worked through over a fortnight, with somebody else checking it. This is dull and it prevents the problems that are genuinely difficult to fix afterwards.
