What a Labor-Only Crew Can and Cannot Do

Labour-only is a genuinely useful service and it is frequently misunderstood, usually because people assume it is a full move minus the vehicle. It is not, and the differences matter on the day.

Just-In-Time Moving provides labour-only crews across West Valley City and Salt Lake County. Here is a straight account of the boundaries.

What we do

Load and unload a truck, trailer or container you have arranged. Carry items between a residence and the vehicle. Disassemble and reassemble standard furniture. Move heavy items within a house, between floors, or into storage. Stage a load properly and secure it.

All of that is what the service is for and it is where it earns its cost.

What we do not do

Drive your rental truck. The rental agreement names authorised drivers and our crew is not among them, which is a contractual matter rather than a preference. If you need the vehicle driven, that is a different service with our own truck.

Supply the truck, boxes, tape or packing material as part of a labour booking. We bring dollies, straps and blankets for protection during handling. The consumables are yours.

Disconnect or reconnect utilities, gas or plumbing. Washers, gas ranges and hot tubs need the connections handled by the appropriate trade before and after. We will move the appliance.

Take responsibility for how you packed. This is the significant one. When you pack and seal a box, nobody can establish what went in or how, so owner-packed contents are treated differently from anything a crew packed. It is a genuine evidentiary limit rather than a technicality.

Move hazardous material. Fuel, propane, chemicals and ammunition do not travel.

The grey areas worth agreeing in advance

Whose fuel and mileage. Yours, on a labour-only job.

What happens if the truck is too small. It happens, and it is worth deciding beforehand whether the crew waits for a second trip or the job ends.

Whether the crew handles anything specialist. Pianos, safes and spas need equipment and should be booked as such rather than added on the morning.

Time. Labour is booked in hours, so a crew arriving to a house that is not packed is being paid to wait.

How to get it right

Describe the job properly when you book: truck size, stairs at both ends, anything unusually heavy, and whether the packing will genuinely be finished.

An accurate description gets an accurate estimate, and it is free and in writing.
