The bill of lading

The contract. It is the document that governs the move, and it takes precedence over what anybody said on the phone.

Before signing, check the pickup and delivery addresses, the dates, the pricing basis, the valuation level, and any special instructions you agreed. Confirm the company named is the company you hired.

You should be given a copy. Keep it, and keep it accessible rather than in a sealed box.

The inventory

On a long-distance move, a list of what is being loaded, frequently with condition codes noted against each item.

This is where a lot of later disagreement is decided. Those codes describe the condition of your furniture before it moved, and if a piece is recorded as scratched at the outset, that is the starting point for any claim.

Walk through it rather than accepting it. If you disagree with a condition note, say so before signing and have it amended. Adding your own note is legitimate.

At delivery, check items off as they come in and note anything damaged or missing on the document at that point, before signing for receipt. Signing a clean delivery receipt and raising a problem the following week is a considerably weaker position.

What never to sign

Blank or partly completed documents, on any assurance that they will be filled in afterwards. This is the single most common feature of moves that go badly wrong.

Anything you have not read because somebody is waiting. Take the minute. A crew can wait a minute.

Payment

Establish beforehand when payment is due and what methods are accepted. Be cautious about large sums demanded in cash, and about any request to pay by wire or gift card, which is never legitimate.
