Most furniture can be replaced if the worst happens. A few pieces in a household cannot, either because of what they are worth or because of who they belonged to.

Those pieces should be treated differently, and that starts before the truck arrives rather than after something goes wrong.

Just-In-Time Moving works throughout St. George and Washington County. We are licensed in Utah and carry general liability insurance.

Tell us in advance

The single most useful thing. A crew that knows a piece is a family heirloom handles it accordingly and plans the route around it.

A crew that does not know is treating it like a dresser, competently, but without the extra care that a fragile old piece deserves.

Understand what makes old furniture fragile

Antique furniture is not simply old; it is built differently. Joints are glued and pegged rather than bolted, and hide glue loses strength with age and heat. Veneer lifts. Old timber has usually dried and shrunk, so joints that were tight are no longer.

The practical consequence is that an antique can fail in transit without anybody handling it badly. A piece that was already loose is the piece that comes apart.

This is why condition is recorded before lifting rather than argued about afterwards.

Document it properly

Photograph each piece from several angles before it is touched, including close-ups of any existing damage, loose joints, lifted veneer or old repairs.

If a piece has been valued, keep the documentation accessible rather than in a box on the truck.

Valuation is where people get caught

Worth understanding clearly. The basic level of a mover's liability, included at no charge, is settled by weight rather than value. For an antique that is a very small fraction of what it is worth.

Full value protection costs extra and is what actually corresponds to the item's value. Ask which level your estimate assumes.

Beyond that, items of unusual value frequently need declaring specifically in advance to be covered at all. Do not assume a general policy covers a piece nobody was told about. Ask your own insurer too, since a scheduled item on a homeowners policy may or may not extend during a move.

The climate consideration

Relevant here. Old wood responds badly to sudden change, and the dryness in southern Utah is harder on antique furniture than most places people move from.

Do not place a piece near a vent, a fireplace or in direct sun, and allow it time to acclimatise before judging any movement in the joints.
