Do You Need a Senior Move Manager?

There is a service that sits between a family and a moving company: somebody who plans and coordinates an older person's move, sorts and organises belongings, and sets up the new home.

We are a moving company, not that. It is worth explaining the difference plainly, because the two get confused and they solve different problems.

What a move manager does

Works with the person and the family to plan the whole transition. Helps decide what comes, which is the genuinely hard part of a downsizing move. Produces a floor plan for the new home. Coordinates sale, donation and disposal of what does not come. Books and supervises the movers. Unpacks and sets up the new place, often to the same arrangement as the old one.

They are project managers for the whole change rather than for the day.

What we do

The physical move. Packing if you want it. Transport, placement, furniture reassembly. Hauling for what is being disposed of.

We will happily work to somebody else's plan, and we do that regularly.

When a move manager is worth it

The family is far away. The commonest case by a distance. Somebody has to be in the house making decisions over weeks, and a relative flying in for a weekend cannot do it.

The volume is overwhelming. A house occupied for forty years, going into an apartment.

Nobody can take the time. This is weeks of work, not a weekend.

The family disagrees. A neutral professional defuses a great deal that relatives cannot.

There is memory loss or frailty involved, where pace and familiarity matter and somebody experienced makes a real difference.

When it is not necessary

Where family is local, available and able to help. Where the move is modest, or from a house that is already manageable. Where the person is well able to make their own decisions and wants to.

In those cases the sorting is the family's to do, and a mover is all you need.

How to find one

There is a professional association for this field with a member directory, which is a reasonable starting point. Ask about experience, references, what is included, and how they charge, since arrangements vary.

Ask specifically whether they subcontract the moving or expect you to book it, and be clear that any mover they use should be licensed and insured.
