Removing and Disposing of an Old Hot Tub

Nobody wants it, it will not fit in a skip, and it is sitting in the garden of a house you are trying to sell.

Plenty of the spa work we do is not moving one. It is getting rid of one: a tub that stopped working years ago, came with the house, or has simply reached the end.

An unwanted hot tub is a genuinely awkward object, and people put off dealing with it for years.

Just-In-Time Moving works throughout St. George and Washington County.

Why it is not a simple haul

A spa is large, heavy, and built as a single moulded shell surrounded by a cabinet. It does not come apart the way furniture does, it does not fit in a standard container, and it usually sits in a back garden with a fence between it and the street.

So the job is the same access problem as moving one, plus disposal at the end.

What has to happen first

Drain it completely. A tub with water in it is not going anywhere. This includes the plumbing, not just the shell.

Have it disconnected electrically by an electrician, and the abandoned circuit made safe. This matters especially if you are selling.

Decide about the cover, steps and surround, which usually go at the same time.

Whole, or cut up?

The two approaches, and the choice is usually made by the access.

Removing it whole is cleaner and faster where there is a route: a gate that can be widened by taking out a panel, a reasonably level path, and somewhere for a vehicle.

Where there is no route, a spa can be cut down on site. It is noisier, dustier and takes longer, but it turns an impossible extraction into a manageable one, and it avoids the cost of a crane.

Which is cheaper depends entirely on your garden rather than on the tub.

Is it worth anything?

Be realistic. A working spa in reasonable condition has some value and is worth listing, and a free listing will often find somebody who will remove it themselves, which solves the problem entirely.

A non-working tub, or one with a cracked shell, has essentially no value. People do sometimes take them for parts, but do not delay a sale waiting for that.

Before you sell the house

Worth doing in advance rather than leaving it to negotiation. A derelict spa in the garden is a visible problem for buyers, and dealing with it beforehand almost always costs less than the price adjustment it invites.

Send photographs of the spa, the gate and the route to the street, and we will quote it. The estimate is free.
