Swim spas have become common around St. George, where an outdoor swimming season runs most of the year. They are also the single most demanding item in this line of work.

The scale of the difference

An ordinary hot tub is roughly seven or eight feet square and can be tipped on its side and rolled through a gate on dollies by a crew.

A swim spa can be twelve to twenty feet long, several thousand pounds empty, and in many cases cannot be turned on its side at all without risking the shell. That single fact removes the technique that makes ordinary spa moves possible.

Length is the real problem. A long rigid object cannot get round a corner that a square one manages easily, so a route that works for a hot tub frequently will not work here.

Access decides everything

Assess this before anything else, and assess it honestly.

Can it get from where it stands to a vehicle in a straight enough line? Is the gate wide enough, or can enough fence come out? Are there level changes, retaining walls or steps? What is overhead along the route? Is it set into decking or a surround that will have to be dismantled?

For many swim spas the honest answer is that there is no ground route, and a crane lift over the house is the only option. That is a specialist service arranged separately and it costs accordingly.

Two-piece units

Some swim spas are supplied in two sections that join on site. If yours is one, that changes the job considerably and may make an otherwise impossible extraction routine.

Check your documentation or the manufacturer. It is worth ten minutes to find out.

Preparation is the same but matters more

Full drain including the plumbing, blown out. Electrical disconnection by an electrician; a swim spa's supply is usually more substantial than a hot tub's. Cover and any lifter removed.

The destination needs to be ready

A pad rated for the load, level, and sized for the full footprint. Filled with water and swimmers, a swim spa is very heavy indeed, and the base is not a place to improvise.

Access at the new address needs the same assessment as the old one, and it is worth doing before you commit to moving it at all.
