Getting a Safe Into a House Still Being Built

There is a window during construction when a safe goes in easily, and it closes before the house is finished.

With as much building as goes on around St. George, a good number of safe deliveries are into houses that are not finished. Handled well, that is by far the easiest safe installation there is. Handled late, it becomes one of the hardest.

Just-In-Time Moving moves safes across St. George and Washington County.

The window, and why it matters

Early in a build, a safe can often be brought in through an opening that will later be a wall, across a bare slab, before flooring, trim and cabinetry exist.

Later, the same safe has to come through a finished front door, along a hallway with painted walls, over a floor somebody has just laid, and around trim that damages easily.

The physical job is identical. The risk and the protection required are completely different, and so is the cost.

Talk to the builder early

Tell them at the design stage if you intend to have a safe, and where. Several things follow from it.

The slab and anchoring. A ground-floor slab handles both weight and fixings properly. If the safe is going anywhere other than a slab, the framing should account for the load rather than being asked to carry it afterwards.

The route. Doorways, corners and any turn. Worth confirming a safe of your dimensions can reach the intended spot at all, since safe closets are sometimes framed to a size the safe cannot get into.

Power nearby if you want a dehumidifier rod, which is worth having here.

Flooring. Deliver before the finished floor goes down where you can. It removes the largest risk in the whole job and means the safe sits on the slab.

Coordinate the timing properly

Construction dates move, and they move late. Do not book a safe delivery against a projected completion; wait for a date the site can actually confirm, and keep some flexibility.

Confirm site access as well. Unfinished roads, no driveway, and contractor vehicles are the practical obstacles on an active site, and a truck that cannot get close turns a short job into a long carry.
