About This Service

People assume a dry climate means nothing inside a safe can corrode. It is a reasonable assumption and it is not quite right, and a move is the natural moment to think about it since the safe is being repositioned anyway.

Just-In-Time Moving moves safes across St. George and Washington County.

Why a dry climate does not mean a dry safe

A safe is heavily insulated, largely sealed, and made of steel with considerable thermal mass. That combination means the inside lags behind the room.

When the room warms quickly and the steel is still cool, moisture in the air can condense against the cold interior surfaces. That is the mechanism, and it does not require a humid climate, only a temperature difference.

Two situations here make it more likely than people expect. A safe in an unconditioned garage, which is common and where the daily temperature swing is large. And a safe against an exterior wall or on a slab, where the steel stays cooler than the room air.

What that means in practice

Condensation inside a safe causes surface rust on anything steel, degrades paper documents and can affect electronics stored there.

The usual answer is a dehumidifying rod or rechargeable desiccant, and it is cheap relative to the contents. Rods need a power feed, which is worth planning for before the safe is placed and anchored rather than afterwards.

Placement decisions to make before it arrives

Inside the conditioned envelope of the house is better than a garage. It matters more here than in a mild climate, because a St. George garage in summer is an extreme environment.

Away from an exterior wall where you have the option.

Somewhere with power nearby if you intend to use a dehumidifier rod.

On a slab where possible, which handles both the weight and the anchoring properly.

Since the safe is essentially immovable once placed and bolted, these are decisions to make now rather than to revisit.

Heat, separately

A safe's fire rating relates to a fire, not to a garage at a hundred and forty degrees through an afternoon. Prolonged heat is hard on ammunition, on any adhesive, on documents and on electronics.

That is a further argument for keeping a safe inside the house.

While it is empty

The safe travels empty regardless, so the move is a good moment to check the interior for existing rust, replace old desiccant, and photograph and inventory the contents while they are out.

Gun Safe Movers — FAQ

Can a safe get damp in a dry climate?

Yes. A safe is insulated, sealed and has real thermal mass, so its interior lags behind the room. When the room warms quickly and the steel is still cool, moisture can condense on the cold interior surfaces regardless of the climate.

Where should a safe go in the house?

Inside the conditioned part of the house rather than the garage, away from an exterior wall, near a power point if you want a dehumidifier rod, and on a slab where possible for both weight and anchoring.

What should I do while it is empty?

Check the interior for existing rust, replace old desiccant or fit a dehumidifying rod, and photograph and inventory the contents while they are out. The safe travels empty anyway, so it is the natural moment.
