About This Service

Most advice about saving money on a move assumes you have already decided to hire one. For a student move that is the wrong starting point, so here is the honest version.

Just-In-Time Moving works throughout Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County, and we would rather tell you when a crew is not the answer than book one that is not needed.

When you probably do not need movers

A single room of belongings, no furniture beyond a desk chair, a ground floor at both ends, and access to a car. That is several carloads over a few evenings, and it costs fuel.

The point at which it stops being sensible is furniture. A bed frame, a desk, a sofa or a mattress, on stairs, changes it from tedious to genuinely difficult, and it is where people injure themselves.

The cheapest arrangements that do involve help

Split it. Move the boxes yourself across the preceding week, and hire a crew for a short window for the furniture only. That puts paid help exactly on the heavy, awkward part and none of it on the part you can do in your own time.

Share with roommates. If several of you are leaving the same building, one booking is meaningfully better value per person than several, because much of what you are paying for is a crew reaching you and working one address. Agree beforehand who is settling it.

Move at a quiet time. Midweek and mid-month, and outside the turnover weekends when everyone in the building is moving at once. Availability is better and the day is genuinely quicker.

Labor-only. If somebody has a vehicle and is comfortable driving it, hire the lifting rather than the whole service.

What costs you money without you noticing

Not being packed. The job is billed on the crew's time, so this is money rather than an inconvenience. Everything boxed, taped and closed before they arrive.

Paying to move things you will not keep. Student furniture is rarely worth transporting twice, and almost never worth storing for a year.

Parking you did not check. If the truck cannot get near the door, that walk is the biggest single factor in how long the job takes.

Tell us your budget and what you actually have. We will tell you straight whether it needs a crew.

Student Movers — FAQ

Do I even need movers for a student move?

Often not. A single room with no real furniture, ground floor at both ends and access to a car is a few carloads over a few evenings. It stops being sensible once there is a bed frame, a sofa or a mattress, particularly with stairs.

What is the cheapest arrangement that still involves help?

Move the boxes yourself over the preceding week and hire a crew for a short window for the furniture only. That puts paid help exactly on the heavy awkward part and none of it on what you can do in your own time.

Is sharing with roommates cheaper?

Noticeably, per person, because much of what you pay for is a crew reaching you and working one address. Agree beforehand how it is split and who is settling it, rather than sorting that out in a doorway.
