Hiring Moving Help Safely as a Student
Students are the group most likely to hire from a classifieds post, and the least likely to check anything first.
Small budgets push people toward the informal end of any market, and moving has a large informal end. Some of it is fine. Some of it is two people with a pickup truck and no insurance, and telling them apart matters more than the price difference.
Just-In-Time Moving works throughout Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County.
Check three things, whoever you hire
Is it a business? Findable, with a phone number that belongs to a company rather than only a listing. This one question filters out most of what goes wrong.
Are they insured, and will they show it? Not a formality. If somebody is injured carrying your sofa down your stairwell, or a wall in a shared corridor is damaged, the question of who is responsible arrives immediately. Ask, and ask to see it.
Is there a written figure before the day? Even a message confirming the rate and how time is counted. The pattern to avoid is a verbal price, a half-loaded vehicle, and a revised number.
The specific risks in student moving
Payment before work. Be wary of anybody wanting a significant sum up front. A booking fee can be normal; a large proportion of the total is not.
Nobody accountable. If the arrangement is with an individual and something goes wrong, there is nothing behind it. That is the trade you are making for a lower price, and it is worth making knowingly.
Your building's rules. Many complexes require a certificate of insurance from the moving company. Somebody without insurance cannot provide one, and you will find that out on the day when the building declines to let them in.
That last point catches students out regularly and it is worth checking with your housing office before you book anybody.
What good looks like at any price
Asks about the job before quoting: floor, lift, parking, what furniture there is. Turns up with pads, straps and dollies. Gives a written figure. Says if something is not workable.
We are licensed in Utah and carry general liability insurance, and provide certificates routinely.
One thing worth saying to students specifically: the cheapest option is frequently not a cheaper company, it is a smaller job. Moving fewer things, at a quieter time, with the boxes already shifted by car, costs less than any amount of shopping around and carries none of the risk that comes with the informal end of the market. Reduce the job first, then get it quoted, and compare on that basis rather than trying to find somebody who will do the whole thing for very little.
