Different businesses, genuinely different moves

Salt Lake City has an unusually broad commercial base, and the sector changes the job more than the square footage does.

A medical or clinical space has equipment and records, and both bring requirements about handling and sequencing that need to be agreed before anyone lifts anything. A professional office is mostly a workstation and technology problem. A retail unit is fixtures and stock against a hard lease deadline, where the date is genuinely immovable. Light industrial brings weight and often forklift or dock access.

The logistics that actually decide the day

For anything downtown or in a multi-tenant building, the building itself is the constraint. Freight elevators usually have to be reserved, and in a busy building the slot you want may already be gone. Loading docks are shared. After-hours access needs arranging with whoever holds the keys and the alarm codes. None of this is difficult, and all of it stops a move dead if it was not done.

Most building managers will also want a certificate of insurance before a crew is allowed in. Ask us for it as soon as you have a date. Processing on the building side is often slower than people expect, and an unprocessed certificate is one of the more common reasons a commercial move has to be rescheduled.

On your side, the highest-value preparation is deciding the destination layout in advance and labeling to match. It does not need to be a formal drawing. It needs to be specific enough that the crew places things instead of asking, because a crew asking a question is a crew standing still.

It is also worth nominating one person on your side who can make decisions on the night. Not a committee, and ideally not someone who has to phone somebody else. Business moves generate a steady trickle of small questions that nobody anticipated, and the difference between a move that runs to time and one that does not is usually whether there was somebody there who could simply answer them.

Winter adds one more item to the list. If your move runs on a January evening, the path from the dock to the truck is going to need clearing and salting, and in a shared building that is somebody's responsibility but not always an obvious one. Establish whose it is in advance rather than at nine o'clock at night with a loaded dolly waiting.
