The practical advice, from having done a lot of these: begin with the basement, and begin weeks before the move rather than days.

It is the part that takes longest, it is the part where decisions are hardest, and it is the part that gets skipped when a deadline arrives, which is how people end up paying to move boxes across town that they then pay again to get rid of. Working through it slowly and early is the single thing that makes the rest of the move manageable.

What helps is sorting into three destinations rather than two: what goes to the new home, what goes to family, and what is being cleared. Two-way sorting stalls, because the difficult items are precisely the ones that are neither keeping nor throwing. Coloured stickers work better than labels and much better than memory.

Pace, timing and who decides
