Apartment moves get treated as the easy option because there is less to move. In Salt Lake City that is often backwards. The volume is smaller and the day is harder, because in a building you control almost none of the things that decide how long it takes.

The building runs the move

In a downtown or mid-rise building, three things decide the day and the building owns all three.

The freight elevator, first. Most buildings require moves to be booked into a slot, and the slot is finite. If you have three hours of elevator time, the move is planned around three hours of elevator time, and everything else follows from that. Book it before you book the movers, not after.

The loading area, second. Where the truck can legally sit is rarely where you would like it to sit. In parts of downtown that means a designated bay that may be shared, and it can mean a considerably longer carry than the building's residents realize, because nobody walks that route carrying a dresser except on moving day.

Access and hours, third. Many buildings restrict moves to certain days or hours, require a certificate of insurance from the moving company, or need a fob or code the crew will not have. Ask your building manager all of that in one conversation, early. The insurance certificate in particular takes longer to process than people expect.

Older walk-ups and student rentals

Not every apartment here is a modern building. There is a lot of converted and older stock in the central neighborhoods, and that brings the opposite problem: no elevator at all, narrow stairs with a turn, and a doorway that predates the sofa you bought.

The turn at the bottom of the stairs is what usually stops things, more often than the stairs themselves. If you know something was difficult to get in, tell us, because it will be at least as difficult to get out.

Around the university, turnover weekends are the busiest of the year and every tenant in the building is trying to use the same stairwell on the same day. Call earlier than feels necessary.

Standard furniture disassembly and reassembly is included, which matters more in apartments than anywhere else, since flat-packed furniture frequently will not come out any other way.
