The questions that only apply to a long move

Who actually drives it, and who unloads? The single most important question. Some companies load your things and hand them to somebody else in the middle. That is not automatically bad and it is something you should know, because every handover is a point where accountability thins out and information gets lost.

Is my load travelling alone? Ask whether your household is on a truck by itself or combined with others. Combined loads are normal and they change the delivery arrangements, so it matters that you know rather than assume.

What is the delivery arrangement, a date or a window? A window is the honest answer for most long routes and particularly for anything crossing mountains in winter. A confident date should make you ask what happens if it is missed.

Will my things be stored at any point? Between pickup and delivery there is sometimes a gap and sometimes a warehouse. Ask directly.

Is there an inventory, and do I get a copy? This is the document that matters at the far end. Without it, a missing box is a conversation about memory.

What good answers sound like

Specific rather than reassuring. A company that says a window rather than a date, explains what happens if weather closes a pass, and describes what an inventory looks like is telling you how the work is done.

Vagueness on any of the five above is worth taking seriously, more so than on a local job, because you will not be present for most of what happens.

Licensing and insurance shown rather than asserted. A written estimate. And whether they asked you enough to quote properly, which for a long move means an actual look at what you own rather than a guess over the phone.
