About This Service

People ask whether a mover is insured, receive a document, and file it without reading it. The document is short and it is worth thirty seconds, because it answers more than the question you asked.

Just-In-Time Moving is licensed in Utah and carries general liability insurance, and provides certificates routinely. We work throughout West Valley City and Salt Lake County.

What to look at

The dates. A certificate covers a policy period. Check that your move date falls inside it. This is the single most common thing nobody checks, and a certificate issued eight months ago may or may not still describe reality.

The name on it. It should be the company you are hiring. If the certificate names a different entity, ask why, because it may mean the work is being subcontracted.

What type of cover it shows. General liability is what covers damage caused in the course of the work. That is what a building manager is asking for. It is not the same as cover for your goods in transit, which is a separate question worth asking separately.

Who issued it. It should come from an insurer or broker rather than from the moving company's own letterhead.

If your building needs one

Ask them precisely what they require, because many want to be named specifically and some want particular wording. A generic certificate that does not match gets rejected and the clock restarts.

Then ask us as soon as you have a date. The insurance side is quick; the building's review is not, and two days is sometimes not enough.

The follow-up question

Having established there is cover, ask what applies to your belongings, what the limit is and what is excluded. Cash, documents, jewellery and irreplaceable items are excluded essentially universally, which is why they should travel with you.

And ask what the process is if something is damaged, and what they would need from you. A company that answers that clearly has one.

Keep the certificate somewhere you can find it afterwards rather than only forwarding it to a building manager. If a question arises weeks later about what cover was in force on the day of your move, that document is the answer, and retrieving it from an email thread you have since archived is harder than saving it once. The same applies to the written estimate and any correspondence about the job.

Moving Company — FAQ

What should I check on an insurance certificate?

The dates first, because a certificate covers a policy period and your move needs to fall inside it. Then that the name is the company you are hiring, what type of cover it shows, and that it was issued by an insurer or broker rather than the mover.

Does the certificate cover my belongings?

Not necessarily. General liability covers damage caused in the course of the work, which is what building managers ask for. Cover for goods in transit is a separate question with its own limits and exclusions, so ask about it separately.

My building wants specific wording. What now?

Ask them exactly what they require, since many want to be named specifically, then tell us as soon as you have a date. A generic certificate that does not match gets rejected and the clock restarts on their review.
