The Safe Travels Empty: Contents and the Law

Every safe we move is moved empty. That is a firm condition and it is worth explaining, because people occasionally assume it is easier to leave the contents where they are.

Just-In-Time Moving moves safes across West Valley City and Salt Lake County. We are licensed in Utah and carry general liability insurance.

We do not transport firearms or ammunition

Stated plainly. Firearms, ammunition and anything similar do not travel on our trucks, and they are not in the safe when we handle it.

Those items are the owner's responsibility to transport, and to do so in accordance with the applicable law. If you are unsure what that requires, particularly if you are crossing a state line, ask somebody qualified rather than guessing; the rules differ by jurisdiction and are not something a moving company should be advising on.

The same applies to ammunition on a practical level: it is a hazardous material and it does not go on a moving truck under any circumstances.

The weight reason

Separate from the legal one and substantial in its own right.

A safe's contents can add a great deal of weight, and unlike the safe itself that weight is not fixed in place. It shifts as the safe is tilted, which is exactly what happens on a dolly and on a staircase.

A crew that has assessed a safe at eight hundred pounds and finds it behaves like eleven hundred with a moving centre of gravity is in a genuinely dangerous position, and it is worst at the point where it is least recoverable.

The other things to remove

Documents, cash, jewellery and anything irreplaceable. These should be with you rather than in any container being handled, for the same reason they do not go in a moving box.

Also anything loose that can move around inside and cause noise or damage.

Before the day

Empty it completely and check the bottom, which is where things get left. Know the combination and confirm it works, since a safe that cannot be opened at the far end is a locksmith call. Do not lock the door on the way out if the mechanism can only be opened electronically and the battery is low.

If it is anchored, tell us, because bolts need releasing and the floor at the old address may need making good.
