Four questions for your insurer

Are my belongings covered while being moved? Some policies extend to goods in transit, some partially, some not at all. This is the core question and it takes one call.

Am I covered at both addresses during the overlap? If you hold two units for a few days, ask when cover begins at the new one and ends at the old.

Is my contents figure still realistic? People insure for what they owned when they first rented and never revise it. Add up a laptop, a television, a bicycle, clothing and a few years of accumulation and the number is usually higher than the policy.

Are high-value items scheduled? Instruments, jewellery, cameras and collections frequently need listing individually above a threshold.

What it does not cover

Generally, damage caused by a moving company, which is that company's responsibility rather than your insurer's. And generally, cash, documents and irreplaceable items, which is why those travel with you.

Also worth knowing: your renters policy is not what covers damage to the building's corridors and lift. That is why complexes ask a moving company for a certificate of insurance, and it is a separate question from yours.

Why your lease cares

Most leases require renters insurance and many require proof at renewal or at move-in. If you are moving into a new complex, expect to provide it, and update the address on the policy when you move rather than months later.

Doing that at the same time as the transit question makes it one phone call rather than two errands.

Practical steps regardless

Photograph anything valuable before it moves, with condition and serial numbers. Keep documents, jewellery and medication with you. Raise any damage on the day while the crew is present rather than afterwards.
