Better tiebreakers than price

Who asked better questions. The clearest signal available. The company that asked about your basement, your staircase, the garage and the parking has understood your move. That understanding is what makes an estimate hold and a crew arrive correctly sized.

Who was willing to tell you something unwelcome. That your date is difficult, that an item may not fit, that a cheaper arrangement might suit you better. A company describing reality before you have paid them will describe it afterwards too.

Who was easy to reach. How a company communicates before you are a customer is the best available prediction of how they communicate on a day when something needs sorting out.

Who has capacity for your date. If yours is fixed, a confirmed date beats a slightly lower price.

Which quote is comparable. Check the two are quoting the same job: same crew size, same inclusions, same assumptions about access. Frequently they are not, and the difference explains the gap.

Reasonable tiebreakers

Whichever crew size suits you. Whether disassembly is included. Whether they can do an evening or a weekend. Whether they handle certificates of insurance routinely if your building needs one.

Poor tiebreakers

A slicker website. A larger fleet, unless capacity is your constraint. Star ratings taken at face value, since moving reviews skew for structural reasons.

And then decide

If two companies genuinely check out equally, the difference in outcome is smaller than the time spent agonising. Pick one, book it, and put the effort into being packed instead, which affects your day more than the choice between two competent firms.

There is one situation where it is worth slowing down rather than deciding: when the two quotes are far apart and you cannot explain why. That gap always has a reason, and it is usually crew size, an inclusion, or a different assumption about your access. Ring the cheaper one and ask what their number assumes. Either you learn the higher quote was padded, or you learn the lower one is going to be corrected on the day, and both answers are worth the phone call.
