The things to ask about specifically

Materials. Pads, wrap and floor runners are usually part of the service. Boxes and packing paper frequently are not, and if a crew ends up boxing things on the day, both the materials and the time may be additional. Ask.

Disassembly and reassembly. Standard furniture disassembly and reassembly is included in a residential move with us. Ask any company, because it is not universal, and because standard does not mean everything. A bed frame is standard. A wall-mounted television, a gym machine or a modular closet system may not be.

Appliances. Moving them is one thing. Disconnecting anything gas, plumbed or hard-wired is qualified work that is not a moving job at all, and needs booking separately at both ends.

Stairs and long carries. Should be in the quote if you described them. That is the reason the questions at quoting stage matter.

A second stop. Collecting from a storage unit, or dropping at a relative's on the way. Say so up front; it is a different job.

The garage, shed and anything in storage. The most under-described part of nearly every move and the most common reason a figure moves.

The question that covers the rest

Ask directly: what would make the final figure differ from this estimate? There should be a clear, short answer. Ours is more to move than was described, access that turned out different, or a house that was not finished packing.

If a company cannot answer that plainly, you have learned something.

Get it in writing

The estimate should record what it assumed: the volume described, the access, the crew size. That record is precisely what is missing whenever a move goes wrong and everybody is relying on memory.
