Getting a Spa Out of a Back Garden

Almost every difficult spa job is an access job. The tub itself is manageable; the route from where it sits to where a truck can park is what determines whether the move is straightforward, expensive, or occasionally not possible as things stand.

The usual obstacle: it arrived first

Spas are commonly delivered into a bare back garden and everything else is built afterwards. Fences go up, a deck gets extended, a pergola is added, a shed goes in beside the gate, and trees grow.

By the time the spa leaves, the route it came in by no longer exists. This is the single most common surprise on a spa move and it is why we ask for photographs of the whole path rather than the tub.

What we assess

Gate width and whether the posts can be removed. Most side gates are narrower than a spa on its side. Frequently a panel or two comes out and goes back, which is routine.

Level changes. Steps, retaining walls and slopes. A spa on dollies needs a surface it can roll on, and grass after rain is not one.

Overhead. Pergolas, low branches, eaves and gutters where the route runs beside the house.

What the spa sits on. Whether it is on a pad at ground level or set into decking, which is a different job because the decking usually has to come apart.

Where a truck can park and how far the carry is from there.

When a crane is the answer

Sometimes there is genuinely no ground route: a walled garden, a spa surrounded by construction, or a house with no side access at all. Lifting over the house is then the option, and it is a specialist service arranged separately.

It costs what it costs, and for an older spa it is worth weighing against the tub's value before committing.

Fence panels and making good

Removing and reinstating a section of fence is common and usually the cheapest solution by a distance. Agree beforehand who does it and what condition it goes back in, particularly on a shared boundary where the neighbour should be told.

Send photographs of the route

Not just the spa. The gate, the path, any steps, the overheads, and the street. That is what we quote from, and it is what stops a crew arriving to a job that cannot proceed.
