What actually goes wrong
The lift. In a building with hundreds of residents and one or two lifts, waits of thirty or forty minutes are normal at peak, and a lift held open while somebody loads makes it worse for everyone.
Then parking. Loading zones fill early and stay full, and a car left blocking one gets a notice or gets towed.
Then time. Contracts end at a stated hour and staff do check.
Go early or go late
The peak is the middle of the day. First thing in the morning is dramatically quieter, and the evening before the deadline is often quieter still.
If the building offers booked slots for the lift or the loading bay, take one the moment they open. They are gone within hours.
Be completely packed the night before
The commonest error is packing on the day. It puts you into peak hours and it means you are carrying things down one at a time.
Everything sealed, labelled and stacked by the door the previous evening. Then move-out day is only carrying, which is the fast part.
Move it in the fewest possible trips
Borrow or rent a hand truck if you can. Stack and strap rather than carrying armfuls, and use bags for soft items so they compress.
If there are several of you, one person stays with the vehicle while others load, which solves the parking problem and halves the trips.
Do the checkout properly
Clean before you carry things out, not after, since it is much easier in an empty room and you will be out of time later.
Photograph the room empty, including floors, walls and any existing damage, before you hand the key back. That is the deposit conversation and it can only be had now.
Return the key where you are told and get confirmation it was received.
