Preparing the Pad Before the Spa Arrives

A filled spa weighs several thousand pounds. What it stands on is not a detail.

The base is the part of a spa installation people think least about and the one that causes the most trouble later. A tub set on an inadequate surface will settle unevenly, and an unevenly supported shell is a shell under stress it was not designed for.

Just-In-Time Moving moves spas across West Valley City and Salt Lake County. Have the base ready before we deliver.

Understand the weight

An empty spa is a few hundred pounds. Filled, with people in it, a full-size tub commonly reaches three to four thousand pounds or more.

That load sits across the base of the cabinet and it is constant. Whatever is underneath has to carry it indefinitely, in freeze and thaw, without moving.

What works

A concrete pad is the standard answer. Properly poured, several inches thick, level, and sized to the tub's full footprint with no overhang.

Spa-specific composite base panels over compacted, level ground are a legitimate alternative and are commonly used.

A reinforced deck, but only one built or assessed for the load. This is the case where people get it wrong. An ordinary deck built for furniture and people is not designed for a concentrated multi-ton load, and it should be evaluated by somebody qualified before a spa goes on it, not afterwards.

What does not work

Bare soil, grass, or gravel that has not been properly compacted and levelled. Paving slabs laid loose on sand, which shift with freeze and thaw. Timber sleepers or blocks under the corners, which loads the shell at points rather than across the base.

All of these settle, and they settle unevenly, which is the problem.

Level matters more than flat

A spa must be level in both directions. Water finds level even when the tub does not, so an out-of-level spa is visibly wrong at the waterline, drains poorly, and stresses the shell.

Check it before filling. Correcting it afterwards means draining and lifting again.

The other things to have ready

The electrical supply installed and inspected, or at least scheduled. Access for the crew to reach the pad. Enough clearance around the tub for the cover lifter and for panel removal, since service access is needed eventually.

Consider where water goes when the spa is drained, and whether the position gets afternoon sun or is exposed to wind, which affects running cost in a Utah winter.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should a hot tub sit on?

A properly poured concrete pad several inches thick, level and sized to the full footprint, or spa-specific composite base panels over compacted level ground. A deck only if it was built or assessed for the load by somebody qualified.

How much does a filled spa weigh?

A full-size tub with water and occupants commonly reaches three to four thousand pounds or more, and that load is constant. Whatever is underneath must carry it indefinitely through freeze and thaw without moving.

Why does level matter so much?

Water finds level even when the tub does not, so an out-of-level spa is visibly wrong at the waterline, drains poorly and stresses the shell. Check before filling, since correcting it afterwards means draining and lifting again.
