Brokers and Carriers: Who Are You Actually Hiring?

There is a distinction in long-distance moving that shapes the whole experience and that most people encounter for the first time when something has gone wrong.

Some companies perform moves. Some arrange for other companies to perform them. Both exist legitimately and they are quite different things to hire.

The difference in practice

When the company you hired is the company that arrives, there is one relationship. The people who quoted, loaded, drove and delivered all answer to the same place, and if something needs resolving there is one number.

When the work is arranged out, you have contracted with one party and your belongings are with another. That can go perfectly well. It also means the party you chose and vetted is not the party in your house, and that information about your move has to travel between organisations.

The problems people report are rarely that this arrangement exists. They are that they did not know it did.

How to find out

Ask plainly: do you carry the load yourselves, or arrange for another company to? It is a fair question with a straightforward answer, and a reluctance to answer it is itself the answer.

Then ask who unloads at the far end, which is where handovers most often happen even when the loading was done by the company you hired.

If work is being arranged out, ask who the carrier is and whether you can verify them, and ask who you contact during transit.

Neither is wrong

An arranged move can be the right answer, particularly on an unusual route. What you should not accept is not knowing.

The thing to avoid is discovering on loading day that the people at your door work for somebody you have never spoken to, which is when it becomes difficult to do anything about it.

There is a simple tell worth watching for. If the company quoting you never asks to see what you own, either in person or on a video call, that is frequently because they are not going to be moving it. A carrier needs to know what fits on a truck. Somebody arranging the work for a third party only needs a number good enough to win the booking, and the survey is the step that separates the two more reliably than anything either of them says about themselves.
