The First Week Trading at a New Address

Commercial move planning stops at the door. The first week at a new address is where a relocation either lands well or produces a fortnight of small failures.

Day one: test with real people

Not that the network is up. Have several staff actually log in, print, join a call, take a payment and open the systems they use daily, before the business depends on it.

Things that pass a technical test frequently fail a real one, and the time to find that is with your IT provider still available.

Test the phones properly, including whether calls to the old number reach you and whether anybody is picking up a line nobody has noticed.

Check the card terminals and point of sale before the first customer, not with one waiting.

Make sure you are findable

The thing that costs money quietly.

Check every listing and map profile shows the new address and that the pin is in the right place, which it frequently is not for a new unit. Check the website, invoices, email signatures and any booking platform.

Put signage at the old address and tell regular customers directly rather than relying on them noticing.

Confirm couriers and suppliers have the new delivery address, and that nothing is still routing to the old one.

Sort out the building

Find the electrical panel, water shut-off, alarm panel and stop-cock, and make sure more than one person knows.

Test the alarm and understand the code procedure and who the monitoring company calls.

Establish the bin arrangements, the cleaning arrangement and who to contact for maintenance.

Check the cooling works properly under load, which in this climate matters and which an empty unit does not reveal.

Look after the staff side

Ask people what is not working. In the first week they will notice things you will not: a printer nobody can reach, a meeting room with no signal, a door that does not lock, parking that turned out to be a problem.

Fix the small ones immediately. They are cheap now and become entrenched complaints later.

Close out the old premises

Final meter readings, keys returned with written confirmation, and the making-good obligations completed rather than deferred.

Then confirm the old utilities and services are actually cancelled, which is frequently forgotten and quietly billed.
