Packing for a Long Move Is Not Packing for a Local One

A box that survives fifteen minutes across town may not survive a week, several handlings and a hot trailer.

Long-Distance Movers Specialists

People pack a long move the way they packed a local one and are surprised by the difference in outcome. The physical demands are genuinely different, and so is what should go in the boxes at all.

Just-In-Time Moving works throughout Washington and Washington County.

What is actually different

More handling events. A local move is loaded once and unloaded once. A long move may be loaded, transferred, stored briefly and unloaded, and each event is a chance for something to shift.

Vibration over hundreds of miles, which works loose anything that can move and abrades anything touching anything else.

Time. Days rather than hours, with temperature swings.

You cannot go back. On a local move a forgotten item is a ten-minute drive. On a long one it is gone.

Pack tighter

The single most important adjustment. Every box should be full to the top and firm, with soft material filling every void.

A half-empty box crushes under stacking, and a box with room inside lets contents move against each other for hundreds of miles. Neither matters much across town.

Use new boxes rather than ones that have already moved house, because cardboard fatigues and a long move is where that shows.

Tape properly: the bottom before filling, several strips, and the seams.

What should not go on a long move at all

Wider than the local list.

Anything liquid, which leaks over days. Candles and anything wax, which will not survive a trailer in summer. Electronics and batteries, which suffer over days of heat. Artwork, instruments and photographs. Medication and cosmetics.

Perishable food, obviously, but also opened pantry items, which attract pests over a week.

All of that fits in a car.

Inventory properly

Number every box and keep a list of number, room and rough contents. On a local move you can find things by opening boxes. On a long move, with a delivery window and possibly a shared truck, the list is how you know everything arrived.

Photograph anything valuable with condition and serial numbers.

Note that owner-packed boxes are commonly treated differently for claims, because nobody can establish what went in or how. That argues for having fragile items packed professionally on a long move specifically.

The two-week box

Bedding, towels, basic kitchen, tools, chargers, medication, documents and clothing, travelling with you. Assume the later end of the delivery window.
