Pool Tables, Aquariums and Other Difficult Items

Most furniture is a question of weight and doorways. A few items are genuinely different, and they are the ones most likely to be attempted with friends because they look manageable.

Pool tables

The clearest case. A slate pool table is not moved; it is dismantled, transported and reassembled by somebody who knows how.

The playing surface is slate, in one, two or three pieces, each weighing several hundred pounds. It is brittle. A dropped or twisted slate cracks and is expensive to replace.

The felt is stretched and stapled and generally has to be removed and re-fitted. The frame comes apart in a specific order, and the table has to be levelled properly at the far end or it will not play true.

This is specialist work rather than moving work, and the sensible arrangement is a table mechanic for the dismantling and setup with a crew for the transport. Doing it any other way is how a table gets ruined.

Aquariums

Never moved with water or gravel in them, and larger tanks should not be moved even empty without care.

A glass tank's seams rely on even support. Lifting a large tank by the frame, or setting it on an uneven surface, stresses the silicone joints, and a seam that fails does so later, at home, with water in it.

Everything comes out: water, substrate, decor, equipment. Livestock is your responsibility and needs its own arrangements; we do not transport animals.

Tell us the size, because above a certain point a tank needs a purpose-made crate rather than blankets.

Exercise equipment

Treadmills and multi-gyms are heavy, top-heavy and full of pinch points. Most dismantle to a degree and should.

Consult the manual, because some have transport locks and some should not be tipped.

Large glass and stone

Glass table tops, stone-topped furniture and mirrors travel on edge, upright, crated or heavily padded, never flat. Stone tops are the ones people underestimate: they are extremely heavy and they crack along the grain if flexed.

Any of these should be mentioned when booking rather than added on the morning. They change crew size, equipment and sometimes whether the job needs a different trade entirely.
