Packing a House in Stages

Packing is planned as an event and it works far better as a process. Spread across weeks it is genuinely easy; compressed into a weekend it is the reason moving day goes wrong.

Here is a workable sequence.

Six weeks out: sort, do not pack

Deciding is a separate job from packing and it is slower. Do it first and do it by category rather than by room, because the same kind of thing lives in four places and you never see the total otherwise.

Book the hauling collection for what is going, and book it before you start, because a booked date is what makes the decisions final rather than provisional.

Five weeks: the garage and the loft

Start with the spaces you do not enter daily. Around here garages are large and they are frequently a third of the load.

Deal with fuel, propane, paint and chemicals now rather than on the morning, since none of it can travel and the county collection has its own schedule.

Four weeks: books, decorations, seasonal

Everything you will not miss. Books in small boxes, which is the rule people break most often and regret on the stairs.

Three weeks: spare rooms and storage

Whole rooms can be finished and closed at this point, which is psychologically useful because progress becomes visible.

Two weeks: most of the living space

Ornaments, media, most of the linen, out-of-season clothing. Keep out one week of clothes per person.

This is the honest checkpoint. Look at what remains against the evenings available, and if it does not fit, book help now rather than discovering it on the morning.

One week: the rest, except the kitchen

Bedrooms, bathrooms, the last of the living room.

Confirm utilities, the crew arrival time, and any HOA gate access or certificate.

The final days: the kitchen

Last, and give it real time. It is the slowest room in the house and the one where breakage happens.

Keep out a kettle, a few mugs, a pan and cutlery in a box that travels with you.

The night before

Everything sealed, labelled on the sides, stacked near the door. Essentials box in your own vehicle. Both routes clear.

Then stop. A crew arriving to a finished house is the difference between an eight-hour day and a ten-hour one, and you are paying for the difference.
