Uprights, grands, and the stairs in between

An upright is the more common job and the more deceptive one. It looks like a piece of furniture, and people move them badly all the time by treating them as one. The mass sits high and toward the back, which makes an upright want to tip in exactly the direction you least want it to when it is on a slope, a threshold or a stair nosing. It is moved on proper equipment, strapped, with a crew positioned for the tip that should not happen rather than the one that will not.

A grand is a bigger job but in some ways a more predictable one, because there is no pretending it is furniture. The legs and pedal lyre come off, the case goes onto a piano board on its side, and it is wrapped and strapped there. It is a procedure, and the procedure is the same whether the piano is going across town or across the room.

Stairs change everything for both. So do turns at the bottom of stairs, which are more often the real obstacle than the stairs themselves. If your piano has to make a ninety degree turn into a hallway at the foot of a staircase, that is worth mentioning when you call.

What we need to know before the day

Tell us the type and, if you know it, the make and model. An upright is not one thing; a small spinet and a full-size studio upright are meaningfully different jobs. For a grand, the length matters.

Then tell us about the route at both ends. Stairs and how many. Whether there is a turn. Door widths if anything looks tight. What the surface is between the door and where the truck can park, because gravel, a long grass run or a steep drive all change the approach. Photographs help more than descriptions.

One thing worth saying plainly: moving a piano affects its tuning. That is true of any piano move done by anyone, and it is a function of the instrument being moved and changing environment, not a sign anything went wrong. Plan to have it tuned after it settles in its new room rather than the day it arrives.
