People assume an apartment move is easy because there is less of it. Sometimes it is. But the volume is rarely what makes an apartment move difficult. The building does.

Stairs, elevators and loading zones

Three things decide how an apartment move goes, and none of them is how much furniture you own.

The first is vertical access. A second-floor unit with an external staircase is a different job from a fourth-floor unit with a single small elevator shared with everyone else in the building. Both are perfectly manageable; they just need different crew sizes and different amounts of time, and we would rather size that correctly than send too few people and have it take all day.

The second is the carry. The distance from where the truck can legally stop to your front door is often the single biggest factor in how long the day takes, and in a lot of complexes it is much further than residents realize, because they have never once walked it carrying a dresser. If parking is at the far end of a lot, or through a courtyard, say so.

The third is the loading zone itself, which usually belongs to the building rather than to you. Some complexes require moves to be booked. Some restrict them to certain hours or certain days. Some have a gate code that changes. Almost all of them have somewhere the truck is not allowed to be, and finding out which spot that is on the morning of the move is a poor use of everyone's time.

What to sort out with your building

Ask your office or manager four questions before you book: do moves need to be booked in advance, are there restricted hours, where does the truck go, and is there anything you need from us such as a certificate of insurance. That last one catches people out in the newer managed complexes, and it can take a while to process, so ask early.

If you are in a student rental near the university, be aware that the turnover periods are heavily booked for everyone. Moving at the end of a term means competing with every other tenant in the building for the same stairwell on the same weekend. It is very much worth calling earlier than you think you need to.

Standard furniture disassembly and reassembly is included, which for apartments matters more than usual: bed frames and desks that went in flat-packed frequently will not come out any other way.
