Student moving here has a timing problem that most places do not. The academic year ends as the temperature climbs, so moving out and storing belongings happens at the start of the hottest stretch rather than at a mild point in the calendar.

What not to store over summer

Some of this list surprises people.

Candles and anything with a wax or gel base. They will not survive, and a melted candle ruins whatever it was packed with.

Electronics and anything with a battery. Take them with you. This includes laptops, consoles and anything with an internal cell.

Vinyl records and photographs. Records warp and photographs stick together.

Anything liquid or aerosol. Toiletries, cleaning products, anything pressurised.

Anything perishable at all. Including unopened food, which is how a unit acquires an insect problem.

What stores fine: furniture, books, kitchenware, clothing packed properly, bedding that is dry and not sealed airtight.

Packing a unit for the season

Do not seal fabric or upholstery tightly in plastic. A unit swings through real temperature changes and trapped moisture is what ruins soft furnishings. Cover rather than wrap airtight.

Keep everything off the concrete on boards or pallets.

Leave an aisle down the middle. Almost nobody does and almost everybody regrets it, because retrieving one item from a wall-to-wall unit means unloading half of it.

Label boxes on the side facing the aisle rather than the top, since once stacked that is the only face you can read.

The move itself

Take the earliest start available, both for your sake and because work slows in the heat.

Be completely packed before the crew arrives, since the job is billed on their time.

Share the booking with roommates if you can. Much of what you pay for is the crew reaching you and working one building, so a shared job is meaningfully better value per person. Agree beforehand who is settling it.

Check whether your complex needs the move booked or restricts hours, and be honest about how far a truck has to park from the door.

One last thing worth sorting before term ends rather than during it: if you are sharing a unit with roommates, agree in writing who owns what and who is paying for the storage across the summer. Shared units work well and they go wrong in exactly one way, which is somebody moving out of the arrangement early and everybody else discovering the arrangement was never actually agreed. Sort it out while you are all in the same building.
