Spa moves are among the most preventable jobs to get wrong, because almost everything that stops one is knowable in advance. Here is the list with the reason for each.
Just-In-Time Moving moves spas across Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County.
A day or more ahead
Drain it fully. Not just the shell. The pipework, the pump housing and the heater all hold water after the tub looks empty, and that residual water is weight in unpredictable places and a mess in a truck. Blow the lines out if you have the means.
In cold weather, drain close to the move rather than well before, because water left in the lines of a disconnected tub can freeze and damage a working spa before it is even loaded.
Book the electrician. A hard-wired spa needs disconnecting at the panel and reconnecting at the other end. Both are separate work and both need arranging rather than assuming.
Measure and send photographs. The tub, the gate, the tightest point of the route, and the destination with its base. Actual numbers rather than impressions, because two inches of clearance and one inch of interference are completely different jobs.
The day before
Clear the route. Move planters and garden furniture, cut back anything that has grown across the path since the tub went in, which after a few years is usually more than you remember.
Confirm the base at the destination. Level, solid and continuous, and if it is new concrete, fully cured. Grass, soil and gravel are not bases.
Decide about the gate or decking. If something needs to come off, establish who is doing it and whether it can go back. It is much better decided in advance than negotiated with a spa on its side in your yard.
On the day
In winter, clear the route to bare ground and salt it. A spa on a dolly on a slippery slope is not a manageable risk.
Be there, or somebody who can make a decision. Spa moves throw up more genuine judgement calls than most jobs.
And have a view on what happens if the route turns out not to work. Occasionally a measurement is off, or something is fixed more solidly than it looked, and the honest answer on the day is that the tub cannot come out without removing a fence panel or a section of decking. Knowing in advance whether you are willing to do that, and who would put it back, turns a stalled morning into a short delay.
