About This Service

Because the local market is small, people in Cedar City often end up considering companies based in St. George, Provo or Salt Lake. That can be perfectly sensible, and the economics are different from hiring locally.

We work here and we also travel, so this cuts both ways for us. Here is the honest version.

Just-In-Time Moving works throughout Cedar City, Iron County and southern Utah.

What travelling adds

Travel time, usually billed, and reasonably so. A crew coming from St. George is roughly an hour each way; from the Wasatch Front it is a substantial part of a day.

Ask how travel is charged: at the full hourly rate, a reduced rate, a flat fee, or built into the quote. Companies handle it differently and it is the single biggest reason two quotes differ.

Less flexibility on timing. A crew travelling from three hours away starts later and cannot easily come back the following morning if the job overruns.

Weather exposure. In winter, a crew travelling the I-15 corridor is subject to conditions on the route as well as at your house. That is a real scheduling risk between November and March.

When it is worth it anyway

When local capacity is genuinely gone, which in peak weeks it will be.

For a long-distance move that is going in their direction anyway. A company based where you are moving to may quote well, since the return leg is not empty for them.

For a specialist item where the right equipment and experience matter more than the travel. A piano or a safe is worth bringing the right crew for.

For a very large household needing a size of crew a small market cannot field.

What to check

The same things as anybody: licensing, insurance certificate, USDOT registration for interstate work, employees rather than casual labour, and a written estimate after a real assessment.

Then two specific to distance. Ask whether the company that quotes is the company that will arrive, or whether the work is passed to a partner. And ask what happens if they cannot get here on the day, which in winter is a fair question.

Ask locally first

Not out of loyalty. A local company has no travel to bill, can usually be more flexible on timing, and can come back the next morning if needed.

If we are booked, we will tell you plainly rather than stringing you along, because in a small market that matters.

Moving Company — FAQ

What does hiring an out-of-town mover add?

Travel time, usually billed and reasonably so, plus less flexibility on timing since a crew travelling three hours starts later and cannot easily return next morning. In winter it also adds exposure to conditions on the route.

When is it worth it?

When local capacity is genuinely gone in peak weeks, for a long-distance move going in their direction anyway, for a specialist item where equipment and experience matter more than travel, or for a household too large for a small market to crew.

What should I ask a company travelling here?

How travel is charged, since that is the biggest reason quotes differ; whether the company quoting is the one that will arrive or the work is passed to a partner; and what happens if they cannot reach you on the day.
