Fewer Movers in a Smaller Market

Cedar City is not a large market. There are considerably fewer moving companies operating here than along the Wasatch Front, and that has practical consequences for anybody trying to book one.

What a small market does to availability

The main effect is not price but capacity. In the busy weeks, around the university calendar and through summer, the local companies fill up and then there is nothing left.

That is different from a large city, where somebody always has a crew. Here, booking three days out in July may simply not be possible at any price.

The answer is straightforward: book several weeks ahead in the busy season, and take the earliest date offered rather than shopping around for a week and losing it.

Where the quotes come from

You will get quotes from local companies and from companies based elsewhere who will travel here.

A company travelling from St. George or further will usually include travel time, and that is legitimate rather than a markup: somebody is paying for the crew and the vehicle to get here and back. Ask specifically whether travel is billed and how, because it is a real difference between quotes that otherwise look similar.

Ask also whether there is a minimum number of hours. Minimums matter more on a small job, and they vary.

Comparing fairly in a thin market

With fewer quotes available, each one matters more. Give every company exactly the same information: both addresses, stairs, the garage and outbuildings, anything heavy, and your dates.

Then ask each the same questions. Is this hourly or fixed. Is travel billed. Is there a minimum. What is included, and what would make it go up.

Be cautious about a quote well below the others. In a small market that usually means a different assumption rather than a better price, and the correction arrives once your belongings are loaded.

What actually saves money here

Flexibility, which is worth more in a thin market than anywhere. Winter, mid-month and midweek. Moving less. Being completely packed. Doing the boxes yourself and booking a crew for the furniture.
