Moving in Snow and Ice

Cedar City gets proper winter, and a good share of moves here happen in it. Done properly it is unremarkable. The difference is almost entirely preparation.

The route comes first

Before anything is carried, the path from the door to the truck gets cleared and treated, at both addresses. Not just the driveway: the steps, the threshold, the turn, and wherever the truck is parked.

Ice on a step is the single most likely thing to go wrong on a winter move, and it goes wrong while somebody is carrying a piece of furniture and cannot see their feet.

Salt or grit down early enough to work, and re-treat during the day, since a cleared path refreezes as the light goes.

Floors take the real damage

Everything coming into the house is wet, and wet boots plus grit is abrasive.

Hard protection down along the whole route at the destination, not a sheet. Doorway mats at every entrance. The route covered before the first item comes in rather than after somebody notices the floor.

Salt is worse than water: it marks hardwood and can damage finishes. Any new house or new flooring needs saying so when you book.

What the crew should be doing

Working at a deliberate pace rather than a fast one. Traction on their boots. Smaller loads on steps than they would carry in summer.

The truck positioned for the best footing rather than the shortest carry, which is frequently not the same spot.

Loading so that nothing sits in falling snow while the truck is open, and keeping the doors shut between loads.

What you should do

Clear and treat before we arrive, not while we wait. This is the most useful thing available to you and it directly reduces the hours.

Have the heat on at both ends, and keep it on. A house with the doors open all day gets cold quickly, and a destination that has been unheated is unpleasant to unload into.

Set out old towels or mats inside every door.

Move anything weather-sensitive yourself in a warm vehicle.

Start early despite the cold. Daylight, not temperature, is the constraint in December.

Sometimes the answer is to postpone

If conditions are genuinely bad, a good company will say so rather than press on. Ask about the rescheduling policy when you book, so you both know in advance.
